Luxury Train Travel Takes Passengers On Journey Into The Past

Any one who has read novels or seen old movies that take place on trains might feel a sense of regret over missing the Golden Age of luxury train travel. Today's commuter trains might be reasonably efficient. They give commuting workers a chance to work on their laptops or send text messages before they arrive at their jobs. But the thrill and excitement that so many people have heard about from their grandparents is gone.

However, for those who are really determined to experience the excitement, romance and adventure that was the essence of train travel in days gone by there is hope. Since it was founded in in 1989 by Rohan Vos, Rovos Rail has become the last word in world-class luxury travel. Rovos Rail has put not only the luxury but the the romance back into train travel.

Passengers on one of the Rovos trains travel in private suites with full sized beds and private bathrooms. The Royal Suites, which are so big they take up half the length of the carriage even have old fashioned bathtubs with feet.

The spaciousness of the suites sets Rovos apart from other passenger trains. But what makes the train unique and the trip memorable is that all of the cars are vintage coaches that date back as far as 1911. All have undergone meticulous restoration and now the wood paneling and brass fittings shine like new.

Rohan Vos was in the used auto parts business until 1986 when he came in contact with a group dedicated to the preservation of historic steam engines. Bitten by the railroading bug, Vos bought and restored a steam locomotive and four passenger cars. Once he realized that the cost of running his train as a private toy was prohibitive he started selling tickets.

Since those days Vos has expanded his rail line. He has three fully restored trains that carry 72 passengers each. He searches the countryside for old locomotives and passenger cars. He has rescued them from scrap heaps and empty fields. He has purchased them from rail road companies and even from people who have converted them into businesses or living quarters.

But the Golden Age of passenger railroads was more that just beautiful accommodations. What Vos has sought to recreate and perhaps surpass is the attention to detail that made every moment of a rail journey a pleasure. Gourmet foods prepared by expert chefs, the finest wines and friendly but unobtrusive service contribute to the pleasure of a leisurely journey through some of the world's most magnificent scenery.
