Is church a tax deductible country club?

My husband decided to work at target for a little while, and he told me that this lady came to his cash lade with carts of stuff ranging from snack foods and candies, to folding chars, to fancy table linens, to kitchen appliances.

They were chit-chatting while he was ringing her up, and she told him they were having a special get-together for the people at her church.

She then whips out her tax-exempt card for the $400 some odd dollar purchase.

***Question: Are all churches like this? Is it basically a tax deductible country club? Or does this instance not happen much?
I don't mean to be mean. I just thought her spending habits were odd.

This is a surprise. I thought the tax exempt was only for the income tax (tithes and offerings) part, not the items you mentioned. I would check this out by calling a tax expert. This does not sound right to me.

I will admit that many churches are more like country clubs than church. That's why I stopped going. My family and I have our own family Bible study and prayer meeting. We give tithes and offerings to ministries we know are spreading the gospel and helping people.
