Why do my new really expensive Frette sheets (linen) feel really starchy and not soft at all?

I bought these really expensive sheets since these are the sheets used at many luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and the Peninsula. I bought the same sheets and they feel worse than crappy polyester sheets. Starchy and hard. I tried washing them a few times but still not what I thought I was getting for about $450. They are percale cotton and I heard it takes a while to soften, but am I doing something wrong in the wash? Or does the emperor have no clothes and these sheets are actually pretty crappy? Help!

sheet softness and luxury go by thread count and flannel ot satin or even egyptian cotton in high count is softer out of the box Flax linen needs to be washed to remove the sizing and break down the edges of the threads a little to soften the surface also rinse in cup vinegar or baking soda instead of softener it adds chemicals not fluffyness
