House sitting an untidy home?

Hi! I'm house sitting and staying in the home. I have to feed the dogs and fish. The woman promised a clean house, yet the kitchen is cluttered and the beds aren't made with clean linen. The house is also a little bit dusty (floors etc). Should I clean the clutter to make it more comfortable for me? Do you think it's etiquette to leave their home in a better condition than I got it? She said she'll leave me some money. I'm not sure if I should take all of the money. But then again, I'm going to have to clean the house myself before I can live there comfortably?

Go ahead and clean the house a bit, just enough to make it comfortable for yourself while you're staying there. Make the bed that you will be sleeping in, and before you leave wash the sheets again and put them back on that bed. Throw out any moldy/spoiled food that may be in the refrigerator. Wash the dishes that you use and put them away. But don't do an entire top-to-bottom cleaning of the house, as this may offend the owner. It would be an indication that you think she's a lousy housekeeper. Although it may be true!

It may be that the current condition of the home is what the owner considers to be "clean". Everyone has different standards of what a clean house means to them.

By all means, take all the money she leaves for you.
