Are Bed Bugs Keeping You Awake at Night?

Bed bugs do not in general bring you any diseases but their bites during your sleep can cause itching keeping you awake at night and not allowing you to have a good nights sleep.

Bed bugs are small wingless insects that we term as parasites due to the fact that they live off of the blood of humans, particularly when you are sleeping.  Their bites leave red marks on the skin which last for a few days and cause you to itch.  A bed bug feeds very fast and is therefore very difficult to catch even when feeding.

You will know when you have been bitten by a bed bug mainly because of the itching you feel.  This is because when a bed bug bites it injects a substance that allows the blood to flow more easily.

Although it is not known for anybody to have died because of being bitten by bed bugs, they are at the very least irritating.

When trying to decide if you have bed bugs, there are a number of signs that will give you an indication, for instance you will notice small blood spots on your sheets or pillows, this can occur when you have squashed a bed bug when turning over etc.  the next sign can be dark spots again on  your bed sheets, these are caused by the bed bugs excrement. Finally if you smell a musty sweet odour from any part of the bed, this can be caused by a gathering of bed bugs in one particular area.

Bed bugs are not only found in beds but are very often found in the seams and folds of beds and mattresses.  They can also be found in other areas of the bedroom, such as old suitcases or clothes where they can hide during the day before coming out at night.

To get rid of bed bugs in your bedroom you must clean the entire bedroom especially areas where they can hide and not only in the bed.

To remove them from the bed all the bedding should be laundered in hot water this includes sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, mattress covers and blankets.  The mattress needs to be completely cleaned by using some proprietary brand of bed bug killer and also hovered in all the cracks and seams to remove all the eggs.  In some mattresses that are old the infestation may have entered into the inside of the mattress when the only solution would be to purchase a new mattress.  An excellent range of mattresses can be found at www.mattressnextday.co.uk. .

The first and most important thing you must do to prevent bed bugs is to stop them entering your home in the first place. If you have a holiday in a hotel etc. it is advisable to never open your cases on your bed when you return. If the place you stayed at had bed bugs then their eggs may have found their way into your case which will then transfer to your bedroom. If you buy second hand furniture or clothes always make sure that you inspect them thoroughly before bringing them into the house.

Mattress covers are also a great benefit as they can be taken off and washed therefore protecting your mattress.
