Is There More to Sheets Than Thread Count

It can be difficult and time consuming trying to educate yourself on each purchase you make. However, it can be costly and poor judgement to follow the hype and buzz regarding certain products. Sheet sets are something which spend a significant amount of time against our skin, so knowing a bit about them will help you make the right purchase. Just because something has a key word or phrase you have heard before, like high thread count, does not make that particular product better. When all is said and done, how important is the thread count in sheets? Not very!

When buying any type of product, you need to make sure it has been made well. With sheeting, it is important they have quality stitching which does not fray or come loose when you tug on it. It's also necessary to check to make sure each bottom sheet has a sturdy and strong elastic around the corners.

Sheet sets are made from all sorts of wonderful and comfortable fabrics these days in addition to the linen they started out from. Satin's, silks and bamboos are soft and luxurious materials while cotton's and synthetics make up the bulk of selections. Percale is another popular sheet material which is either a closely woven cotton or a closely woven cotton-poly blend.

The size and shape of cotton fibers lend a hand in the quality and making of the yarn which makes up the fabrics in our sheet sets. Long fibers, or long staple cotton is ideal for sheet making. Extra long fibers such as; Egyptian or Pima, are even finer quality and can make even finer yarns.

The yarn size plays a factor into how soft a sheet can actually become. Finer yarns produce a softer feel since they are small and sleek. Fine yarn can also be woven into 2-ply fabrics which produce a thicker and warmer feel, without adding bulk or heaviness.

Once the fabric has been constructed for sheeting, it needs to go through some finishing. Singeing burns off all of the left over bits of fuzz that would eventually cause the sheets to pill up. Mercerizing takes place when the fabric is under tension. It strengthens the sheet as well as makes is look nicer and helps it retain dyes.

With cold weather beating down your door, it's nice to be able to climb into bed and cuddle in some comfy flannel sheeting. Flannel sheets are made with nappy cotton fibers that retain some bulk and help keep you warm. Thin cotton sheets are a nice choice for the summer months, while silk, satin and bamboo sheets are great luxury items.

Depending on where you live, you may not be able to walk into any store and pick out any type of fabric or style of sheet. Keeping this in mind, everyone has their favorite kind of sheet fabric, but not everyone has tried every kind. One person may love flannel year round, while another may enjoy a soft cotton blend.

Good quality sheet sets come in all kinds of fabrics, colors, patterns and varieties. When trying to find the perfect set for you, pay attention to how it was made along with how the package says to care for it. Don't get caught up in terminology because you can get a wonderful set of sheets regardless of thread count.
