My persian cat's eyes always seem to be runny?

I have a 2 year old persian, and his eyes are usually very runny. I clean them daily, and some days are better than others. It is not mucus or anything, but rather a brown watery liquid. I changed his food a while back, and have put him on bottled water, both of which seemed to help some. The vet didn't seem to think that it is anything to worry about as he is a flat-faced persian. I know that the flatter the face, more eye/nose problems are typical, but I have seen other persians with just as flat of a face that don't exhibit this characteristic to this extent. I was just wondering if it may be a food allergy that could be causing it. I asked the vet, and was told that it could be but would be difficult to pinpoint. The liquid from his eyes gets on the furniture, bed linens, and the wall/floor where he eats, and is hard to get off. Any help/suggestions is appreciated!

In Persians, runny eyes are the norm. Wipe them daily with cotton balls, and on bath day use a little vinegar water to help with staining. As for stains on other thing, use bleach on fabrics and comet on surfaces.
